EmpowHER

“EmpowHER,” an initiative by Savvy Initiative, is a transformative program designed specifically for high school girls in Nigeria. With a reach extending to 400 female students in government high schools across the country every month, “empowHER” is all about inspiring, educating, and equipping young girls with the knowledge and tools they need to excel.

Our primary goal is to engage and empower these bright young minds by addressing topics of utmost importance – empowerment and self-sustainability. Through engaging discussions, interactive sessions, and mentorship, we aim to ignite their potential and foster a sense of self-belief that will shape their future.

In addition to these enlightening conversations, “empowHER” also extends a helping hand by providing essential hygiene products like sanitary pads, toilet rolls, tampons, deodorants, and lip balms. We believe that access to these basic necessities is fundamental to every girl’s well-being and dignity.

Furthermore, we go the extra mile by equipping these aspiring leaders with writing materials and books, enabling them to explore the world of knowledge and imagination. We believe that every girl deserves access to education and personal growth opportunities.

“empowHER” is not just a program; it’s a movement dedicated to nurturing the potential of young girls, promoting their well-being, and empowering them to stand tall in a world of endless possibilities. Together, we’re sowing the seeds of confidence, self-sufficiency, and empowerment in the hearts and minds of these extraordinary young women.

Education & Literacy

EmpowHER focuses on increasing access to education for young girls, aiming to improve literacy rates and provide knowledge and skills to succeed in life.

Health & Hygiene

The project addresses the lack of access to essential health and hygiene products, such as sanitary pads which can hinder a girl's ability to attend school regularly. We tackle this by providing these essentials which go a long way to solve truancy.

STEM Education

Recognizing the stark gap in STEM fields, EmpowHER actively encourages and guides girls into exploring non-traditional and male dominated fields such as Engineering and Technology. The goal is to help girls break the glass ceiling and become a beacon of hope.

Opportunity For Improvement

In government secondary schools across Nigeria, a critical challenge persists – a significant deficiency in access to essential hygiene products and proper amenities for female students. This challenge creates a multifaceted problem that hinders both their physical well-being and mental empowerment.

Hygiene and Health Barriers: A substantial number of girls in these schools lack access to essential hygiene products required to manage their menstrual cycles safely and hygienically. The absence of proper sanitary pads, tampons, and related items forces these young girls to endure discomfort and health risks, frequently leading to school absences.
Amenity Shortcomings: Furthermore, public schools often suffer from inadequate facilities necessary for female students’ health and hygiene. The absence of clean and accessible restroom facilities exacerbates the challenges these girls face in maintaining their well-being during their menstrual cycles.
Education Disruption: These challenges result in a disruption of their education. School absences due to the lack of proper hygiene products hinder their academic progress, causing them to lag in their studies and compromising their academic potential.
Mental Empowerment Gap: Beyond the physical obstacles, these public schools generally lack programs for mentorship, guidance, and empowerment, significantly affecting these young women’s self-confidence and personal growth.

Supporting the well-being of teenage girls in Africa is imperative due to the myriad challenges they face. From limited access to education and healthcare to cultural norms restricting their freedoms, these girls often endure early marriage, pregnancy, and gender-based violence.
By extending aid to initiatives addressing their needs, we can tackle crucial areas, enabling these girls to break the cycle of poverty and realize their potential.

The empowHer program teaches us that we should be neat during and after our menstrual cycle. Apart from that, we were taught to have high self-esteem as a girl.

The empowHer program helped me understand the importance of self-hygiene. I appreciated the sanitary package because it is difficult for my parent to give me N700 to purchase a sanitary pad, it is a lot and this initiative saved us a lot of money.

I learned that as a girl child we must be courageous and determined with whatever we want to be in life. We should know how important it is to be clean as a girl at all times both during menstruation and non-menstruation, because cleanliness is next to Godliness.

I learned how the empowHer program taught us to be courageous and have high self-esteem and to be self-dependent not depend on other people especially boys. It teaches us a lot about the habit of a girl child, it is a very helpful program.

We were taught how to be ambitious, diligent, courageous and go for what you want, to be self-reliable. I learned how to take care of myself during my menstrual cycle, to know how often to change my sanitary pads and what to do to avoid contracting diseases.

We were taught the importance of self-confident, to be clean, to be menstrual hygiene, wash our undies and have good hygiene practices.

I learned that cleanliness is next to Godliness. As a female child we should have high self-esteem and to always be neat. I will like more of this empowerHer program, so other girls can learn more about hygiene.

CHIOMA

I learned what personal hygiene is the way and how to take care of my body. I learnt to change my sanitary pad regularly during my menstrual cycle. We should also wash our undies constantly to avoid infection and bathe three times a day or more if necessary.

ONYINYE

I learned how to keep myself clean, having my bath and brushing at least twice a day and the importance of using deodorant to avoid having bad odour. We should always be clean and be properly hygienic.

I learnt that we should bathe and brush at least twice a day. It is also importance that we use our deodorant. I also learned how often I should use my sanitary pads during my menstrual cycle.

I learned that we should be hygienic, bathe twice daily and use deodorant to avoid bad odour. I also learned how often I should change our sanitary pad during my monthly cycle.

The program was very interesting, we were been taught something we do not have knowledge about before now. That is, how to have good proper hygiene practices and some sanitary items were distributed to us.

I learned that as a girl, during menstruation one should always keep oneself clean, change my sanitary pad often, bathe regularly, brush three times a day and keep your body neat. I also know now not to engage in sex during menstruation.

I learned that we should be hygienic whenever we are going through our menstruation, not to be ashamed but rather proud. We should not look down on ourselves as female.

I learned that being hygienic is a very important aspect of being a female child, most especially during puberty period. EmpowHer was very educative, teaching how girls can take care of themselves during different stages of growth.

I learnt of the importance of keeping myself clean. This program has imparted me in a way that I never thought was possible. I want to say thank you to the program and they should keep up the good work.

I learned to be menstrual hygienic, and to always keep myself clean during my monthly cycle. From today, I will always be prepared for my menstrual period. I will inform my parent the good package given to us; toothbrush, toothpaste, bathing soap and sanitary pad.
