Empowher Outreach at Ogbogbo Baptist Grammar School: Empowering 200 Girls Through Hygiene Education

On Thursday, May 15, 2025, the Empowher team from Savvy Initiative continued its grassroots movement of equipping girls with vital hygiene education and essential self-care items at Ogbogbo Baptist Grammar School (Senior). This outreach impacted 200 girls, reinforcing Savvy’s mission to promote dignity, education, and health equity for adolescent girls across Nigeria.

Arrival and Preparation – 12:15 PM

The team arrived on-site at 12:15 PM and waited until break time concluded at 12:45 PM to ensure smooth access to the students. With the support of female teachers, the girls were assembled in the school hall, setting the stage for a focused and impactful session.

Hygiene Awareness and Menstrual Education

The event began with a personal hygiene sensitization session, addressing practical self-care routines and the importance of cleanliness for physical and emotional well-being. A major part of the discussion focused on menstrual hygiene, as this was the most frequently raised concern among the girls.

To break barriers of silence and stigma, the team encouraged a two-way dialogue, answering student-submitted questions and demonstrating how to correctly use a sanitary pad—a critical life skill often overlooked in traditional education settings.

Photos and videos were taken during the session, capturing the engagement and energy of both students and staff.

Distribution of Hygiene Packs

Each of the 200 girls received a brown envelope containing:

  • 1 sanitary pad
  • 1 toothbrush
  • 1 toothpaste
  • 1 bathing soap

These care packages symbolize more than just products—they are tools of dignity and support, helping girls manage their hygiene needs with confidence.

Departure – 1:30 PM

The team concluded the outreach and departed by 1:30 PM, encouraged by the attentiveness and participation of the students.

Why This Matters

At Savvy Initiative, we believe empowerment begins with access to knowledge and basic needs. The Empowher program continues to reach girls where they are, replacing shame with confidence and neglect with care.

The outreach at Ogbogbo Baptist Grammar School marks another strong step in creating a generation of informed, empowered, and self-assured young women across Nigeria.
