Empowher Outreach: Restoring Dignity Through Hygiene Education at Wesley Girls and Ideal Girls Schools

On Wednesday, November 27, 2024, the Savvy Initiative’s Empowher team embarked on a dual-location outreach dedicated to promoting dignity, health, and self-confidence in young girls through personal hygiene education and essential care packages. The outreach, carried out at Wesley Girls High School, Yaba and Ideal Girls Secondary School, Surulere, reached a total of 436 girls.

Wesley Girls High School, Yaba – 10:45 AM

The team arrived at Wesley Girls High School located along Murtala Muhammed Road at 10:45 AM. After a brief wait, the principal formally welcomed the team and gave introductory remarks before the session began. The outreach started with a hygiene sensitization session, educating the girls on the importance of menstrual hygiene, daily cleanliness routines, and self-care practices.

The session was made interactive with a Q&A that allowed the girls to ask questions and share their own knowledge. Photos and video coverage were taken to document the event and celebrate the engagement of the students.

At the end of the session, 274 hygiene care packs were distributed. Each pack included:

  • 1 sanitary pad
  • 1 toothpaste
  • 1 bathing soap
  • 1 toothbrush
All items were neatly packed in a brown envelope for individual distribution.

Ideal Girls Secondary School, Surulere – 1:00 PM

By 12:15 PM, the team departed Yaba and arrived at Ideal Girls Secondary School in Surulere by 1:00 PM. Upon arrival, the girls were assembled and prepared for the session. Similar to the earlier visit, the team facilitated a sensitization session focused on personal hygiene.

The conversation was again interactive, with the students actively participating in the Q&A. 162 care packs were distributed at Ideal Girls, each with the same essential hygiene items. The outreach concluded at 2:15 PM.

Impact

In one impactful day, the Empowher program reached 436 girls across two schools, equipping them not just with physical hygiene tools, but with knowledge, confidence and a sense of being seen and valued.

At Savvy Initiative, we believe that empowering girls with education, resources, and recognition lays the foundation for stronger communities and a brighter future. Empowher is not just a program—it is a movement.
